This summer berry trifle recipe is my go-to dessert for every single occasion, but is especially perfect for the summer season! The berries are fresh from the field, and the trifle is so light that your stomach doesn’t feel heavy in the summer heat. Plus, it’s so family friendly and a much lighter, healthier dessert option for toddlers and kids!
I look for every occasion to make this summer berry trifle, from Memorial Day and 4th of July, to a random Tuesday with my church group. It’s just the best dessert to share with friends! Plus, since 99.99% of kids are addicted to berries (RIP our wallets) this is the PERFECT dessert for them that’s healthy-ish and something they’ll love! Oh, and did I mention it takes less than 10 minutes to make? Win-win-win. Enjoy!

Ingredients Needed for Summer Berry Trifle
Angel Food Cake: The base for this summer berry trifle recipe is angel food cake, which is not only super delicious, and my favorite cake option, but also lower in calories than many other cakes! I like to buy it pre-made from my grocery store bakery for the ultimate easy dessert!
Cool Whip: While most trifle recipes call for pudding, or pudding and cool whip, I like to use just cool whip! It’s lighter and healthier, and doesn’t take away from the other yummy flavors in the bowl. You’ll need 12-16 ounces for this recipe, so buy the large size container!
Strawberries: If strawberries are in season, head to the berry farm to pick them yourself! Otherwise, grab a box of fresh strawberries from the store. Frozen strawberries (thawed) will also work, they will just be runnier.
Blueberries: About half a container of blueberries are used in this recipe, but feel free to use however many you want!
Chocolate Chips: Chocolate makes everything better in my opinion, so a healthy layer of chocolate chips is the perfect addition to this summer berry trifle recipe. But you can certainly leave them out if you prefer.
Feel free to get creative! Want to use a different kind of cake? Go for it! Have other fruits in mind? Sounds great. This summer berry trifle recipe can be adapted to many different ingredient combos depending on what you like.

Baby-Led Weaning for Summer Berry Trifle
If feeding this summer berry trifle recipe to babies or very young toddlers, you’ll want to make sure to cut the blueberries before adding them to the trifle. Blueberries can be a major choking hazard for baby-led weaning!
I also do not personally recommend feeding sugary items like this to kids under 12 months old, they just don’t need the sugar that young!

Storage for Summer Berry Trifle
Keep any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. Don’t worry, I don’t think you’ll have any trouble eating up the leftovers though!
